Britain, France urgently convene UN Security Council to address Gaza crisis
On October 16, Algeria, Britain, and France initiated an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
The UK Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting the alarming conditions in northern Gaza, where access to essential life support systems is rapidly declining, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
According to the United Nations, almost no food has been delivered to the region in the past two weeks.
The statement emphasized the responsibility of Israel to protect civilians and ensure that routes for vital aid are opened. “Together with our French and Algerian colleagues, we have convened an urgent UN Security Council meeting today to address this issue,” the Foreign Ministry added.
The statement also called for an immediate ceasefire to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza and the withdrawal of remaining hostages held by Hamas.
Tensions in the Middle East escalated dramatically after armed Hamas militants infiltrated Israeli territory on October 7, 2023, resulting in the deaths of residents in border communities and the abduction of over 240 hostages. In response, Israel launched a military operation aimed at dismantling the Hamas military and political structure, leading to ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip.
