Slovak PM backs referendum to lift sanctions on Russia
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has promised to support a referendum on lifting sanctions against Russia if such a referendum is announced.
He made this statement on the program "Subbotniye Dialogi" (Saturday Dialogues), Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
"If such a referendum takes place, I will calmly support it," the Slovak prime minister assured.
He also criticised the European Union's statements about introducing new anti-Russian sanctions amid negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
Fico has repeatedly voiced scepticism about Western sanctions on Russia, arguing that they harm Slovakia’s economy and energy security more than Moscow. His position contrasts with many other EU leaders who support maintaining or intensifying sanctions as a tool to pressure Russia over its actions in Ukraine.
Slovakia, as an EU and NATO member bordering Ukraine, plays a strategic role in regional security. However, the country also depends heavily on Russian energy supplies, which adds complexity to its position on sanctions. The EU has consistently reaffirmed its support for Ukraine through financial, military, and diplomatic means, including sanctioning Russia to deter further aggression.
