Finland plans new tourist tax for short-term stay
The Finnish Ministry of Finance has announced plans to introduce a regional tourist tax aimed at short-term visitors. The new tax, which is expected to be implemented by 2027 at the earliest, will be levied on tourists staying for brief periods in the country.
The tax will be optional for municipalities, meaning local authorities will have the discretion to introduce the levy based on their individual needs and priorities. The revenues generated from the tax will be directed to the municipal budget of the area that collects it, Caliber.Az reports via Yle.
The proposal for the regional tourist tax is still in the early stages. The Ministry of Finance will conduct research to assess the feasibility of the tax, including gathering feedback from both municipalities and citizens. Officials will also study the potential impacts of introducing such a levy on the country’s tourism industry and local communities.
