Hamas floats hostage deal for ceasefire as Israel launches new Gaza offensive

19 May 2025 09:35

A senior Hamas official has indicated to US media that the group is prepared to release between seven and nine Israeli hostages in return for a two-month ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of 300 Palestinian security prisoners.

The official, who was not named, stated that the agreement would also require the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) to withdraw to areas east of the Salah al-Din corridor—effectively pulling back to the periphery of the coastal enclave, Caliber.Az reports.

It remains unclear whether this reported arrangement has been presented formally within the framework of the ongoing negotiations in Qatar.

Later, senior Hamas leader, Sami Abu Zuhri, publicly denied rumours that Hamas agreed to release nine Israeli prisoners in exchange for a two-month ceasefire, stating on Hamas-run Al-Aqsa TV Telegram: “There is no truth to the rumors regarding the movement’s agreement to release nine Israeli prisoners in exchange for a two-month ceasefire.” He added, “We are ready to release the prisoners all at once, provided the occupation commits to a cessation of hostilities under international guarantees…”

Meanwhile, Israel launched a new military campaign, “Gideon’s Chariots,” to increase operational control in Gaza and push for the release of hostages. The Israel Defence Forces said the operation aims to “achieve all the goals of the war in Gaza,” and the government is allowing limited food aid into Gaza to avert a hunger crisis.

Analysts suggest Hamas returned to negotiations after US President Donald Trump visited the region. An official told CNN there’s “a renewed push” from US, Qatari, and Egyptian mediators. Netanyahu reportedly supports a US proposal involving the release of half the hostages in exchange for a temporary ceasefire.

While Trump avoided Israel on his Middle East tour, he asserted: “This is good for Israel,” and proposed turning Gaza into a “freedom zone.” He also acknowledged the humanitarian crisis, saying the US would ensure Gaza is “taken care of.”

The UN and aid organisations warn that Israel’s new offensive is severely impacting civilians. Over 300 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,000 injured since May 15, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
