Trump to engage Putin, Zelenskyy in diplomatic phone calls to end Ukraine conflict
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will be holding a series of important telephone conversations on May 19 aimed at ending the ongoing violence in Ukraine.
“I will be speaking, by telephone, to President Vladimir Putin of Russia on Monday, at 10:00 a.m. The subjects of the call will be stopping the ‘bloodbath’ that is killing, on average, more than 5,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers a week, and trade,” Caliber.Az quotes Trump as saying on Truth Social.
He added that following his call with Putin, he will speak to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and then join a discussion involving various members of NATO alongside President Zelenskyy.
“Hopefully it will be a productive day, a ceasefire will take place, and this very violent war, a war that should have never happened, will end. God bless us all!!!,” he added.
Note that, since his 2024 reelection, President Trump has maintained contact with Russian President Putin, mainly focusing on the Ukraine conflict. Their first known call this term, in February 2025, was a 90-minute conversation discussing peace talks, with Trump announcing immediate negotiations.
A follow-up call in March saw Putin agree to pause attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure but reject a full ceasefire.
