Candidate for German chancellorship criticises Scholz for political isolation in EU
Candidate for the German chancellorship Friedrich Merz has said that Chancellor Olaf Scholz is politically isolated within the EU.
"European leaders no longer want to meet with the German Chancellor, who either sits in silence for hours or lectures the world," Merz, representing the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) bloc, said, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
He noted that all major political events now take place without Scholz. For example, the talks between French President Emmanuel Macron, US President-elect Donald Trump, and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Notre-Dame re-opening ceremony in Paris.
"The Chancellor was invited, but apparently, he didn't want to go to Paris," the politician added.
Earlier, Merz promised that if he wins the election, he would provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles (similar to the British Storm Shadow), which have a range of 500 kilometres.
The politician also emphasised that this decision would need to be coordinated with the US and Donald Trump.
