Two tropical storms form in Atlantic and Pacific oceans

20 September 2026 23:30

Two tropical storms have formed in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, with US forecasters monitoring both systems.

Tropical Storm Fay formed in the northern Atlantic Ocean and is not currently expected to pose a threat to land, the Associated Press reports.

As of Sunday morning, the centre of Fay was located about 730 kilometres southwest of the Azores. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometres per hour and was moving north-northeast at around 7 kilometres per hour.

The US National Hurricane Center said no coastal watches or warnings had been issued in connection with the storm. Fay could strengthen slightly in the near term but is expected to weaken and dissipate by the end of the week.

The Azores are an autonomous region of Portugal located about 1,287 kilometres from mainland Portugal.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Odalys formed in the eastern Pacific. Its centre was located about 2,005 kilometres southwest of the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula.

Odalys had maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometres per hour and was moving northwest at around 13 kilometres per hour.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Odalys could strengthen into a hurricane by Monday.

No coastal watches or warnings have been issued in connection with either tropical storm.
