NYT: Trump’s claims on Greenland agreement exaggerate its terms

19 September 2026 18:57

US President Donald Trump’s statements about Washington’s new powers regarding Greenland exaggerate the actual terms of the agreement reached, The New York Times (NTY) reports.

According to the newspaper, citing sources familiar with the negotiations, the agreement provides for the United States to work with Denmark and Greenland on security issues rather than giving Washington control over them.

Danish and Greenlandic officials have also not confirmed that the United States will have veto power over major investments in Greenland’s economy, although Washington had previously sought such authority.

Trump earlier said the agreement would give the United States “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in Greenland and allow it to increase its military presence on the island.

He also claimed that US rivals would not be able to establish bases, deploy military personnel or make significant investments in Greenland without Washington’s written approval.

The agreement is expected to be signed next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. The document’s exact terms have not yet been made public.

Denmark, meanwhile, has said that the arrangement preserves its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
