Macron responds to Trump: Saint Pierre and Miquelon is French territory

French President Emmanuel Macron said the island territory of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon in the Atlantic Ocean is French, speaking upon his arrival in Saint-Pierre, BFMTV reports.

His remarks came in response to a map posted by US President Donald Trump that showed the archipelago under the US flag. Macron emphasized that the territory is “French” and “closely linked to France.”

“We are not going to repeat this every morning just because people come up with strange ideas or say strange things,” he added.

Saint-Pierre and Miquelon is a former French colony off the coast of Canada that has held the status of an overseas collectivity of France since 2003. On September 20, Macron is scheduled to meet Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in Saint-Pierre, describing the meeting as a “strong signal” amid the trade war launched by Trump against Canada.
