China rejects calls to join US-Russia nuclear talks
China has dismissed demands for its participation in trilateral nuclear disarmament discussions between the United States and Russia, calling such requests “unwarranted and unreasonable.”
Spokesperson Mao Ning, representing the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed Beijing’s consistent stance on the issue during a press briefing published on the ministry’s website.
Highlighting the disparity in nuclear capabilities, Mao stressed that the United States, which possesses the largest nuclear arsenal, bears a “special and primary responsibility” to pursue disarmament “honestly and responsibly.”
China’s nuclear arsenal, she noted, remains significantly smaller than those of the US and Russia. “At this stage, it is improper, unjustified and unwise to demand China’s involvement in trilateral nuclear discussions,” Mao said.
Moreover, she criticised Washington for citing a so-called “China threat” to justify increased regional deployments, saying such actions “do not serve the interests of regional countries” and undermine peace and stability.
