17 August 2026 11:56
A 30-year-old tourist, believed to be a US citizen, was killed by a lightning strike on Mount Etna in Italy, according to Rai News.
He reportedly entered a restricted area to get a closer look at the volcano’s summit.
A severe thunderstorm struck the area around midday, and lightning hit him.
“He was found dying several hours later. Firefighters evacuated him by helicopter, and despite emergency medical treatment, he could not be saved,” the report noted.
Intense explosive activity was observed yesterday at Voragine, one of Etna’s summit craters.
Lava fountains were also recorded on the volcano’s eastern side, gradually increasing in size.
