Chinese, Belarusian troops begin live-fire phase in joint drill

13 July 2024 13:24

Chinese and Belarusian troops have progressed to the live-fire phase of their joint military drill, Eagle Assault 2024.

Commencing on July 8 near Belarus' Brest region, approximately 64 kilometres from Ukraine's border, the exercise is slated to continue until July 19, spanning 11 days, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.

Over 100 Chinese troops are participating alongside Belarusian counterparts. The aim of the drill, as stated by China's People's Liberation Army (PLA), is to enhance coordination and military capabilities between the two forces. Activities will include live-fire training with various weaponry and joint anti-terrorism operations.

Belarus' Defence Ministry outlined exercise scenarios encompassing airborne assaults, river crossings, and urban combat, all under the banner of anti-terrorism manoeuvres.

President Alexander Lukashenko's Belarus has cemented ties with Russia and China, allowing Russia to position tactical nuclear weapons in 2023 and recently joining the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), focused on security in Central Asia.

The joint military exercises underscore growing cooperation between Belarus and China, reflecting mutual strategic interests and the exchange of military expertise.
