Türkiye unveils TF-2000: Nation’s first homegrown missile defense destroyer

20 August 2025 22:03

Türkiye has revealed the design of its first domestically developed air and missile defence destroyer, the TF-2000, marking a significant step in the country’s naval capabilities.

The unveiling was made by defence contractor ASFAT as part of the wider MILGEM programme, which aims to strengthen Türkiye’s domestic defence production and technological expertise, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Measuring 149 metres in length, the TF-2000 has been engineered to deliver multi-layered protection against a range of threats, including guided and ballistic missiles. Its design is intended to enhance Türkiye’s maritime defence and provide a versatile shield against diverse aerial threats.

The ship’s debut took place at the IDEF 2025 defence exhibition in Istanbul, which showcased innovations in military technology from around the world.

Key features of the TF-2000 include a reinforced mast structure supporting ASELSAN’s CAFRAD dual-band active electronically scanned array radar. This advanced system is designed to improve situational awareness and target tracking, bolstering the vessel’s defensive capabilities.

Officials say the TF-2000 represents a milestone not only for ASFAT and the Turkish Navy but also for Türkiye’s broader strategic goal of defence self-reliance.

Once operational, the destroyer is expected to become a core component of the country’s naval fleet, enhancing operational effectiveness and deterrence in regional waters.
