Chinese president warns world against slipping back into "law of jungle" era
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on the international community to uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter and prevent the world from sliding back into what he described as the "law of the jungle" era.
Speaking during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Shanghai on Friday (July 17), Xi said all countries should be treated as equal members of the international community, with their sovereignty, territorial integrity and legitimate rights and interests fully respected, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
"We must uphold fairness and justice. Every country is an equal member of the international community. The sovereignty, territorial integrity, and legitimate rights and interests of every nation must be respected. We must never allow the world to return to the era of the law of the jungle," Xi said.
The Chinese president described the current international environment as increasingly unstable and uncertain, arguing that the situation calls for genuine multilateralism and a stronger role for the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
Xi also stressed the importance of adhering to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and safeguarding the international order and rules established in the aftermath of the Second World War.
He said China would continue to pursue practical measures aimed at fostering peaceful coexistence among major powers, adding that Beijing would deepen cooperation with the United Nations to promote global peace, stability and development.
