Cyber gang members to stand trial for hacking Azerbaijani ATMs

The investigation of the criminal case against another member of the transnational organised cybercrime group Sekrieru Ion Alexandrovich, who was arrested by Azerbaijan’s State Security Service and extradited to Azerbaijan, has been completed and transferred to the Sumgayit Court on Grave Crimes for consideration.

The criminal actions of the transnational criminal network, which includes Ion Sekrieru, expressed in the contactless withdrawal of money from Azerbaijani ATMs, are particularly notable for their unique scenario of commission, APA reports.

The indictment clarifies that Ion Sekrieru and other members of the gang, acting abroad, through malicious software introduced into the computer systems of the banks of the Republic of Azerbaijan by an e-mail, took possession of information about the names, passwords and other key functions of the network subjects.

After that, the members of the gang, using various methods of false identification, arrived in the country, and approaching ATMs installed in Baku and Sumgayit, without entering any cards and without resorting to physical intervention, at the command of outsiders through the Internet, took the funds and left the country.

Long-term operational investigative measures made it possible to identify and extradite gang members who are citizens of different countries and hiding in different countries of the world one by one. For actions similar to the script of the film, other foreign citizens Danila Dorin Konstantinovich and Gubchak Sergey Accentyevich, accused by the State Security Service under articles 273.4 and 177.3.2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Azerbaijan (theft by unlawful interference with a computer system or computer data), were brought to Azerbaijan along with Ion Sekrieru and sentenced to severe punishments by the court.
