Azerbaijan’s COP29 team influences key outcomes at UN climate negotiations
Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and COP29 Chief Negotiator, Yalchin Rafiev, led the COP29 Presidency delegation at the 62nd session of the Subsidiary Bodies (SB62) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted by Caliber.Az, Rafiev conducted bilateral meetings with delegations from Türkiye, Australia, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Egypt, and China. He also gave interviews to several major international media outlets.
During the session, the chairs of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies and multiple delegations expressed appreciation to Azerbaijan for its strong leadership and support in facilitating agreement on the SB62 agenda.
As a result of the session, a consensus was reached to begin negotiations on several key items of the COP30 agenda, using draft documents put forward by the Azerbaijani COP29 Presidency as the basis for talks. Some final decisions adopted at SB62 were directly drawn from texts originally drafted by the Azerbaijani side during COP29.
The SB62 session also hosted two special hearings involving both governmental and non-governmental participants, focused on the "Roadmap from Baku to Belém," along with a thematic conference titled "From Baku to Belém: Transitioning Adaptation Ambitions from Negotiations to Action."
