Deadly snowstorms kill 38 in Japan as weather set to worsen

07 February 2026 18:24

As of Saturday, February 7, severe winter weather has claimed at least 38 lives across Japan since January 20, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, cited by Japanese media.

Fatalities have been recorded in nine prefectures, with the heaviest toll reported in the central prefecture of Niigata, where 14 people have died.

Despite the already devastating impact, meteorologists warn that the situation is far from over. The Japan Meteorological Agency has forecast a further deterioration in weather conditions, with heavy snowfall expected to intensify and reach its peak on Sunday, February 8.

The most affected areas are likely to be regions along the Sea of Japan coast. The forecast comes as the country prepares to hold nationwide elections on Sunday, raising concerns about public safety and mobility.

Addressing the situation at a press briefing, Japan Meteorological Agency official Eiji Osada said that several areas are already experiencing record-breaking snowfall levels. He cautioned that the risks remain extremely high, including the danger of snow sliding off rooftops, building collapses, and avalanches. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, warning of an increased likelihood of traffic accidents and injuries caused by slips and falls.

Snowfall is also expected to affect parts of Tokyo. Meteorologists say precipitation could begin later on Saturday and continue through Sunday night across the capital’s 23 special wards.

According to current forecasts, snowfall accumulation over the 24-hour period starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday could reach up to 50 centimetres in Hokkaido, as well as in the Tohoku and Hokuriku regions. The Chugoku region may receive up to 30 centimetres of snow, while the Kanto-Koshin region, including Tokyo, could see accumulations of up to 20 centimetres.
