Demographer: Six million have left Ukraine since war began
An estimated six million people have left Ukraine since the start of the war, according to a leading demographer, Oleksandr Hladun.
Sharing a post on Telegram, he wrote that 57% of those who have left the country are women, highlighting the significant demographic impact of the conflict, Caliber.Az reports.
However, Hladun noted that migration from Ukraine had begun even before the full-scale invasion. By that time, more than 1.5 million Ukrainians had already regularised their status in Europe and obtained permanent residency.
Hladun suggested that pre-war migration was driven largely by domestic factors.
“But the question arises: why were people leaving even before the war. In my view, these are mostly internal problems. Something is not satisfying people in Ukraine. These issues should be examined more closely in order to guide reforms and help prevent further emigration in the future,” he added.
