UN rights chief warns AI could threaten humanity

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has warned that the rapid development of artificial intelligence could pose an existential threat to humanity, calling for urgent international action to ensure its safe use.

“The development of AI may pose a risk to the very existence of humanity,” Türk said on September 7 at the opening of the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

He said that in today’s world, “virtually unlimited power over AI is concentrated in the hands of just a few people”.

Türk called for “full-scale efforts to ensure the safety of AI before it is too late”.

He also urged countries that possess AI technologies, as well as those involved in their supply chains, to agree on “red lines” governing the development and use of AI.
