EU Parliament condemns rights violations in Iran, Afghanistan, Indonesia

22 May 2026 10:03

The European Parliament has adopted three resolutions addressing human rights situations in Iran, Afghanistan, and Indonesia, calling for stronger international action and accountability measures, lawmakers said on May 21.

On Iran, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) expressed solidarity with protesters and political prisoners, condemning executions and the use of the death penalty against dissidents, Caliber.Az reports per the Parliament's statement.

They urged the European Union to expand sanctions against Iranian officials allegedly involved in repression, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and called for travel bans on individuals linked to human rights abuses. Lawmakers also pressed for the closure of diplomatic missions linked to alleged transnational repression and for increased support to ensure secure internet access for Iranian citizens amid reported restrictions.

MEPs also warned of findings by a United Nations fact-finding mission suggesting that state repression in Iran may amount to crimes against humanity. The resolution was adopted by 516 votes in favour, 14 against, and 39 abstentions.

Regarding Afghanistan, Parliament strongly condemned the Taliban’s recently adopted Criminal Procedure Code, saying it wants the government to immediately repeal the Code, end public floggings, executions and all restrictions on women and girls, LGBTQ+ persons, religious minorities and other vulnerable groups. They also urged continued non-recognition of the Taliban government and greater humanitarian assistance for affected populations. The resolution passed with 480 votes in favour, 5 against, and 83 abstentions.

On Indonesia, lawmakers condemned attacks on environmental and human rights activists and called for investigations into recent acid attacks targeting campaigners Andrie Yunus and Muhammad Rosidi. They also expressed concern over legal reforms expanding military influence in civilian affairs and warned that proposed legislation could further restrict freedom of expression. MEPs stressed that human rights considerations should remain central to EU-Indonesia relations, particularly amid concerns over conditions in Papua and West Papua. The resolution was adopted by 469 votes in favour, 38 against, and 62 abstentions.

The European Parliament said all three resolutions reflect its broader commitment to defending human rights globally and ensuring accountability for violations.
