EU’s top diplomat calls for immediate truce in Gaza
Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, condemned the extensive shelling of facilities belonging to the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza and urged for an immediate truce to facilitate humanitarian aid access to the affected population.
“I condemn the massive shelling and destruction of UNRWA facilities. I support the call for an immediate truce to ensure humanitarian aid and safe passage for internally displaced persons,” Borrell stated, emphasizing that “international observers and media should be granted access,” Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
According to the European foreign policy chief, “after several days of hostilities, the reports on the situation in Northern Gaza are appalling.”
“Human suffering from artificial starvation and forced displacement cannot be justified,” he added.
On October 7, 2023, armed members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas crossed into Israeli territory from the Gaza Strip, resulting in the deaths of residents in border communities and the abduction of over 240 hostages. In retaliation, Israel launched a military operation aimed at dismantling Hamas's military and political infrastructure and securing the release of all hostages. As of now, the conflict in the Gaza Strip is ongoing.
