Syrian Democratic Forces open to talks with HTS in case of ceasefire with Turkish-backed group

23 December 2024 17:52

A senior official in the political wing of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) (terrorist organization PKK/YPG — Ed.) expressed readiness to negotiate with the Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS)-led interim government to determine the future role of the SDF.

The official, Riad Darar, stated that the SDF would seek negotiations to ensure its participation in a new Syrian political structure and unify the country, Caliber.Az reports per ISW.

However, Darar emphasized that these talks would only occur if there were a ceasefire with the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA) and the establishment of a demilitarized zone around Kobani. These comments come as Türkiye, the SNA, and HTS pressure the SDF to disarm and integrate into a new Syrian security sector under HTS control, depriving it of its autonomy.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan separately said on December 21 that Türkiye would only discuss the establishment of a demilitarized zone around Kobani after the SDF reaches a settlement with the HTS-led interim government. This demand contradicts the SDF’s requirement for a ceasefire and the creation of a demilitarized zone before negotiations with HTS.

Türkiye and HTS continue to coordinate efforts to pressure the SDF into disarming and integrating into the HTS-led defence apparatus. Fidan met with HTS leader Ahmed al Shara in Damascus on December 22 to discuss Turkish support for the interim government and its control over all Syrian territory.

Fidan had previously stated on December 21 that Ankara preferred HTS to address its concerns regarding the SDF but reiterated that Türkiye would do “whatever it takes” to ensure its national security. This remark refers to Türkiye's strategic goal of "eliminating" the SDF.

Turkish Defence Minister Yaşar Güler also expressed support for HTS and SNA efforts to "liberate" territory from the SDF during a visit with Turkish forces stationed on the Syria-Turkey border. Turkish forces are positioned near Kobani in a manner resembling preparations for previous Turkish incursions into northern Syria.
