EU-UK summit scheduled for 2025 under Poland's presidency As both sides seek to reset post-Brexit relations
During Poland's presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2025, a summit between the European Union and the United Kingdom is scheduled to occur, Member of the European Parliament Michał Szczerba said.
This development comes amid a renewed push by the UK to reset its relations with the EU, a move Szczerba described as crucial for both parties, Caliber.Az reports per British media.
In a statement to PAP Studio, Szczerba highlighted a “new opening” in the European Union, aligned with the priorities of the Polish presidency. He emphasised that the UK government's desire for a reset in EU-UK relations is timely, particularly as both sides navigate the ongoing ramifications of Brexit.
Szczerba expressed his belief that the UK should hold a special status in its dealings with the EU, reflecting the complex and evolving dynamics post-Brexit. He noted that the absence of binding agreements between the UK and the EU has led to significant disappointment, particularly in the areas of foreign policy, security, and research and development initiatives.
In addition to the EU-UK summit, Szczerba indicated that Polish plans for the presidency would include significant projects such as East Shield (Tarcza Wschód), which aims to bolster security and defence collaboration within Europe. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen relations with the United States.
Looking ahead, Szczerba mentioned that an EU-US economic summit is “technically scheduled” for the next year, with attention now turning to the upcoming US presidential election and its potential impact on transatlantic relations.
The planned summit represents a pivotal moment for EU-UK relations, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead as both parties seek to redefine their partnership in a post-Brexit landscape.
