Europe considers 20,000 peacekeeping force if Ukraine ceasefire holds
If a ceasefire is achieved in Ukraine, a peacekeeping force of between 15,000 and 20,000 troops could be deployed, European officials have indicated.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that a meeting of the so-called “coalition of the willing” in Paris would outline concrete security guarantees for Ukraine and discuss the composition and format of any potential peacekeeping mission, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
France and the United Kingdom are expected to provide the bulk of the force, covering both land and air components, while Türkiye has expressed readiness to oversee maritime security in the Black Sea.
Final military plans have not yet been formalised. Most European sources suggest that peacekeepers are likely to be stationed in western Ukraine to support, train, and provide security, rather than being deployed directly on the front lines.
In March 2025, Macron said that a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine could be deployed without Russia’s consent.
“Ukraine is a sovereign country, and if it requests allied troops on its territory, it is not Russia’s place to approve or reject this,” Macron said.
