European Commission urges EU to open membership talks with Bosnia
The European Commission has announced its recommendation to initiate accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This decision was unveiled by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during a session in Strasbourg, Caliber.Az reports, citing Politico.
Von der Leyen commended Bosnia and Herzegovina for the notable progress it has made towards EU membership since being granted candidate status. She emphasized that the country has achieved more progress in the past year than in the previous decade.
Addressing Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), von der Leyen highlighted the EU's evolving approach to the Western Balkans, emphasizing the need for proactive support rather than passive waiting. She stressed the importance of taking responsibility and providing substantial assistance to facilitate the integration of Western Balkan countries into the EU.
Bosnia and Herzegovina attained candidate status in December 2022, marking a significant milestone in its journey towards EU membership. The decision to commence membership talks with Ukraine and Moldova was made by the European Council in December 2023, underscoring the EU's commitment to further enlargement.
Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg welcomed von der Leyen's announcement, emphasizing the geopolitical significance of Bosnia and Herzegovina for Europe. He underscored the importance of EU integration for regional security and stability, particularly amidst the current geopolitical uncertainties and conflicts on the European continent.
The recommendation to open accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina signals a renewed commitment from the EU towards the Western Balkans and reflects the bloc's broader strategic objectives of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
