Female NBA player chosen to President Biden’s council on African diplomacy
US President Joe Biden has appointed a Women's National Basketball Association's (WNBA) player to the Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States.
As reported by AP, the basketball player Chiney Ogwumike of Nigerian descent has been chosen for her previous involvement in charitable projects, such as holding a fundraiser for UNICEF amid the kidnapping of young school girls in her home country by the Al-Qaeda affiliated Boko Haram terrorist organization.
The council, which has also welcomed African-American Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis, is meant to "provide invaluable guidance to reinforce cultural, social, political, and economic ties between the US and Africa, and promote trade, investment, and educational exchanges between the United States and Africa", according to AP. It was first announced by Vice-President Kamala Harris in 2022 at the US-Africa Leaders Summit.
