Finnish presidential office: No measures against Russian consulate in Åland Islands
The Finnish presidential office has announced that Finland will not take any measures against the Russian consulate in the Åland Islands.
“No action will be taken against the Russian consulate in Mariehamn in the current situation. The consular office must operate within its powers. The authorities control this process,” Gazeta.Ru reports citing the Finnish presidential office.
The Åland Islands are a self-governing and demilitarised territory, which means that there is no military in the region in peacetime. The islands have been also neutralised, so the province must be excluded from any possible conflict. Residents of the Åland Islands are exempt from military service.
Earlier, the information went viral that Finland wants to provide the Åland Islands (autonomy within Finland) with weapons for a possible confrontation with the Russian Federation.
