Disarmament of PKK in Northern Iraq to begin next week
A disarmament process involving the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) is scheduled to begin next week in northern Iraq, as part of the Turkish government’s “terror-free Türkiye” initiative, the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) announced.
“We are entering a new phase. According to the information shared with us, we will witness a historic moment together with some steps in the next week,” DEM Party spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan told reporters at a press conference in Ankara, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.
While the exact date and location have yet to be disclosed, Doğan noted that cities such as Erbil and Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq are being considered as possible sites for the initial phase of the disarmament.
She also stated that a message from jailed PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan is expected in the coming days, signaling potential ideological backing from the group’s imprisoned founder.
