Media: Trump pledges support for Ukraine’s air defence in call with Zelenskyy

05 July 2025 08:38

U.S. President Donald Trump has told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that the United States wants to assist Ukraine in strengthening its air defense capabilities, following a sharp rise in Russian missile and drone attacks, according to a Ukrainian official and a source familiar with the call.

The 40-minute conversation, which took place on July 4, centred largely on Ukraine’s urgent need for air defense systems. The discussion comes on the heels of a controversial Pentagon decision earlier this week to pause a shipment of critical military supplies, including air defense interceptors and ammunition, catching both Ukrainian officials and many within the Trump administration off guard, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“Trump said he wants to help with air defense and that he will check what was put on hold, if anything,” one source briefed on the call noted.

Zelenskyy confirmed the conversation in a post on X, saying the two leaders discussed “opportunities in air defense” and agreed to convene U.S. and Ukrainian teams to explore future arms deliveries. “We - in Ukraine - are grateful for all the support provided,” Zelenskyy wrote. “It helps us protect lives, safeguard our freedom and independence.”

The Ukrainian president also reiterated the need for a “just, lasting, and dignified peace,” adding, “A noble agreement for peace is needed.”

The call between Trump and Zelenskyy came just a day after Trump held a separate conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Speaking to reporters on July 4 morning, Trump described the exchange as “very disappointing,” and criticised Putin’s apparent unwillingness to pursue peace.

“He’s not looking to stop,” Trump said. “I wasn’t happy with the conversation.”

Following the Trump-Putin call, Russia intensified its aerial campaign against Ukraine, launching hundreds of drones and at least a dozen ballistic missiles in a renewed wave of attacks on cities and frontline positions.
