Finnish recreational boat illegally crosses Russian border, prompting investigation
A Finnish recreational vessel unlawfully crossed into Russian territorial waters in the Gulf of Finland on July 27, triggering a formal preliminary investigation by authorities.
The incident, which occurred near Virolahti, was confirmed by the Finnish Border Guard, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
According to the official statement, the boat entered Russian maritime territory without authorization before returning to Finnish waters.
“The Coast Guard of the Gulf of Finland is conducting a preliminary investigation into the illegal border crossing that occurred on July 27 in Virolahti. A recreational boat illegally crossed the state maritime border from Finland into Russia and then returned,” the Border Guard stated.
The violation is being treated as a criminal offense involving the breach of state borders. Finnish authorities have underscored the seriousness of the incident, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to international maritime boundaries.
As investigations continue, the Finnish Border Guard is examining the circumstances surrounding the unauthorized crossing to determine the motives and any potential security implications.
