Former Turkmen Front official killed in Iraq

03 March 2023 19:26

The Iraqi Turkmen Front said a former security chief of their party was killed in a bombing at his home in Kirkuk on March 3 afternoon.

Ahmad Tahir was “assassinated” by a bomb attached to his car at his home in Kirkuk city, the Turkmen Front said in a statement, Rudaw reports

Kirkuk police spokesperson Lt Amer Nuri told Rudaw the bomb was a “domestically manufactured” device.

Video shared on social media show a car engulfed in flames and thick, black smoke.

Kirkuk security forces are investigating the incident.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility though similar incidents have been blamed on Islamic State (ISIS) militants.

The Turkmen Front is a coalition of Turkmen parties representing the Turkmen minority in both the federal and regional governments. Kirkuk is an ethnically diverse city home to Turkmen, Kurds, and Arabs.

The Turkmen Front accused “terrorists” of being behind the killing and said the deceased, Tahir, was a “real defender of the Turkmen people and his martyrdom is a great loss for all of us.”
