A powerful explosion at the Lourdes Fireworks Factory in the Salina area of Malta early on Monday (June 1) damaged homes, farms and vehicles, while injuring two men working in nearby fields.
The blast occurred at around 6:30 a.m., sending a large plume of smoke into the air and triggering a series of smaller explosions, Caliber.Az reports, citing Maltese media.
Authorities said all factory workers and nearby residents were accounted for, while the two injured men, aged 47 and 67, were treated in hospital for shock and minor injuries.
The explosion shattered windows, damaged doors and caused structural damage to properties across the surrounding area.
Large stones were hurled onto nearby roads, damaging vehicles and prompting authorities to close off the area and urge motorists to avoid it.
Residents reported feeling shock waves across several towns, with the blast heard and felt over a wide area. Emergency services evacuated people living nearby as intermittent explosions continued for hours after the initial incident.

The MaYA Foundation said farms in the vicinity suffered significant damage, including structural losses and reported livestock casualties. Farmers were temporarily prevented from checking on their animals until the site was declared safe.
Authorities are continuing to assess the damage and investigate the cause of the explosion.
