France considers inviting Xi Jinping to 2026 G7 summit
France is exploring the possibility of inviting Chinese President Xi Jinping to the 2026 G7 summit, as Paris seeks to strengthen its international influence and prepare key diplomatic initiatives.
According to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg, the idea of inviting the Chinese leader is being discussed at a confidential level with France’s allies.
French President Emmanuel Macron is also planning a visit to China in December. Officials at the Élysée Palace emphasised that France aims to foster cooperation with major powers willing to contribute to global stability.
If extended, the invitation to Xi would represent a bold move for Paris. Amid declining domestic support, France is looking to reinforce its standing in international politics.
Media reports indicate that Macron hopes to rethink the G7 format, which has increasingly faced criticism for excluding countries with which U.S. President Donald Trump is willing to engage.
