French 118-year-old nun is recognized as oldest person on Earth
The Guinness Book of Records has announced that a French nun has become the oldest person in the world at the age of 118 years and 73 days.
The Book of Records states that Sister Andrea, a nun born Lucille Random on February 11, 1904, became the oldest living person after the recent death of a Japanese woman, Kanetanaka, at the age of 119 years and 107 days.
Sister Andre, who took her name after she became a Catholic nun in 1944, has also been awarded the title of world's oldest nun by Guinness World Records. She is the second-oldest French woman ever and the third-oldest European woman on record.
Sister André has lived a varied life. In her youth, she worked as a teacher, governess and babysitter during World War II.
The nun, who is partially deaf and uses a wheelchair, said she still tries to keep her mind active.
“They wake me up at 7 am, give me breakfast, then put me at my table, where I do small things,” sister Andre told the Book of Records.
Staff at Sister Andre's nursing home said she was still given a glass of wine every day.
