Spain detains 48 suspects amid widespread forest fire investigations
Spanish authorities announced the arrest of 48 individuals suspected of deliberately setting forest fires, with an additional 134 people currently under investigation.
The update was reported by Europa Press, citing the country’s Ministry of the Interior.
According to the Ministry, the number of detainees linked to various forest fires that have ravaged Spain this summer has risen to 48. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies—including the Civil Guard and the National Police—are investigating a further 134 suspects in connection with these incidents.
Since early June, the Civil Guard has apprehended 36 suspects and initiated investigations into another 110 individuals. The National Police have detained 12 people and formally charged 24 others.
The ongoing wildfire crisis has thrust the region into the heart of a severe climate emergency. On August 13, reports emerged that dozens had sustained injuries due to the fires, with four victims reported in critical condition.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the situation on the social media platform X, describing the wildfire outbreak as “serious” and urging the public to exercise caution amid heightened risks.
