French Cabinet discusses blocking of social networks

French government spokesman Olivier Veran announced plans to block social media during the riots.

“We want the inter-party working group, which would include parliamentarians from all political movements of the two chambers (upper and lower parliaments - ed.) to be able to jointly, based on the events that have taken place, consider changes to the bill, which was submitted to the Council of Ministers for several weeks back and which affects cybersecurity and the use of digital tools,” Veran explained, Gazeta.Ru reports.

The representative of the Cabinet of Ministers pointed out several features of the proposals to limit social networks - for example, it proposes to block the geolocation in order to prevent arsonists from gathering together. Veran also recalled that the French Cabinet requires digital platforms to immediately delete all messages inciting violence.

Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron admitted the possibility of turning off social networks in the event of an aggravation of the crisis in the country.

Protests in France began on the evening of June 27 after the death of a 17-year-old teenager at the hands of police in the suburbs of Paris. They escalated into clashes with the police, pogroms of shops and shopping centres, robberies.
