EU considers 19th sanctions package on Russia, eyes September rollout

15 August 2025 15:04

European Union foreign ministers are set to convene in Copenhagen on 29–30 August to engage in in-depth discussions on the 19th package of sanctions targeting Russia, diplomatic sources confirmed.

The upcoming deliberations will take place under the informal Gymnich format—a biannual gathering of EU foreign ministers that allows for open, non-binding dialogue on pressing foreign policy issues, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“A thorough discussion of the 19th package of sanctions against Russia will take place on 29–30 August in Copenhagen, where the next Gymnich will be held,” the source stated.

The outcome of the Russia–United States summit in Anchorage will "undoubtedly influence" deliberations among European Union member states regarding the forthcoming 19th package of sanctions against Russia.

On 14 August, European Commission spokesperson Arianna Podesta stated that the Commission anticipates the adoption of a new sanctions package against Russia in September, reflecting ongoing efforts to maintain coordinated pressure in response to Moscow's actions.

While details of the proposed sanctions package remain under consideration, the meeting is expected to focus on further tightening economic and strategic pressure on Moscow in response to its ongoing war in Ukraine and related geopolitical developments. Previous sanctions rounds have targeted sectors including finance, energy, defence, and dual-use technologies, as well as individuals close to the Kremlin.

The 19th package comes at a time of renewed international attention on the Ukraine conflict, particularly following the recent Trump–Putin summit in Alaska and diplomatic discussions around a possible ceasefire. EU leaders have reiterated their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, calling for sustained pressure on Russia until meaningful de-escalation occurs.
