Georgian official: Resumed Baku–Tbilisi rail link of “paramount importance”
The resumption of the passenger rail service between Baku and Tbilisi is of “paramount importance” to Georgia, Lasha Abashidze, head of Georgian Railways, said.
Speaking at Tbilisi railway station, Abashidze emphasised the strategic and economic value of restoring the route, which links Georgia with neighbouring Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
He said the renewed service plays a key role in strengthening transport connectivity and supporting passenger mobility in the region.
“This is a very joyful event for us. Overall, this service is of great importance to Georgia, as transport links are being restored and journeys will take place daily,” Abashidze said.
He noted that the service had been suspended for six years before being reinstated, adding that restoring regular daily operations marks an important step for the country’s transport infrastructure.
Abashidze also said demand for the route had been strong, with a significant number of tickets sold shortly after availability, reflecting public interest in the connection between the two capitals.
The Georgian side, he added, had worked closely with Azerbaijani counterparts to bring the service back into operation.
“From today, trains on the Baku–Tbilisi and Tbilisi–Baku routes will operate daily,” he said.
