German Chancellor Scholz defends continued talks with Putin amid election campaign
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who is running as the Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate in the upcoming snap elections, has expressed his intention to maintain dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Scholz made it clear that his efforts to engage with Putin are not part of his election campaign, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
"No, [this is not part of the election campaign], and I believe citizens take this matter more seriously. They believe it needs to be done," he stated.
Scholz further commented that he would continue with these negotiations, as he represents the country in Europe and the world and must ensure that they act responsibly when it comes to peace and security.
"These are very serious matters, and nothing can be overlooked," Scholz said in response to the host's remark that the phone call could be part of an election campaign.
He also stated that he sees his initiative as "a responsible and necessary decision," as even in the face of disagreement between the parties, "we must talk to one another."
He emphasised that one phone call cannot bring peace.
"Of course, that's not the case. All the arguments were simply reiterated. For me, it was also important to repeat my [arguments]," Scholz added.
