Greek farmers intensify protests over delayed EU subsidies Thousands of tractors block roads

08 December 2025 16:01

On December 8, farmers and livestock breeders across Greece escalated road blockades, expanding protests against delayed payments and subsidies.

Around 20 roadblocks are in operation nationwide, with thousands of tractors occupying highways and regional roads. Protesters claim a shortfall of approximately €600 million in EU subsidies and other payments, which have been frozen amid an investigation into corruption in agricultural aid distribution, eKathimerini.com reports.

Major demonstrations are taking place in Thessaly, where around 4,000 tractors have lined up near Nikea. Protests continue on key transport routes, and some border crossings remain closed to freight traffic.

Amid the escalation, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called on farmers to scale back blockades and return to dialogue. He said the government is open to negotiations but emphasised that discussions must be conducted “with open doors.” According to Mitsotakis, a significant portion of payments to farmers will be made by the end of December, while all measures must comply with European Union regulations.

The situation poses a political challenge for the ruling New Democracy party. Government officials acknowledge that payments by the end of December may only temporarily ease tensions, as polls show declining support for the party in Crete and Thessaly.
