Houthi rebels continue attack spree on USS Truman aircraft carrier group in Red Sea
A spokesperson for the Houthi militants in Yemen is claiming their forces staged another attack against the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier and it's strike group stationed in the Red Sea following similar attacks in the past days.
The Yemeni Al Masirah TV network has published the statement by Houthi representative Yahya Saree, according to which the attack involved cruise missiles and drones while not providing details about the scale of the attack or its results.
"Missile forces and drone units carried out a joint military operation, targeting the US aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and several accompanying ships in the northern Red Sea using cruise missiles and drones," Saree stated on January 15.
As Caliber.Az recalls, Saree posted a similar message on January 11 claiming that the Yemeni rebels were targeting the USS Harry S. Truman and warships working with the carrier over a 9-hour period. According to him, the attack forced the aircraft carrier to leave the theater of operations and flee to the far north of the Red Sea.
This latest attack comes after Houthi rebels launched missile and drone strikes on Tel Aviv on January 13 and 14, which hit a critical target.
The US navy has kept a presence in the Middle East since October 2023 following the October 7 attack on Israel by Hamas militants. The US then moved the Gerald R. Ford Carrier Strike Group toward the Eastern Mediterranean from its previous spot, where it had been stationed since before Russia invade Ukraine.
The Truman carrier strike group, which has entered the command area of responsibility in the Red Sea in December 2024, consists of the flagship Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75); Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 with nine embarked aviation squadrons; staffs from Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 8, CVW-1, and Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 28; the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg (CG 64); and two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, USS Stout (DDG 55) and USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109).
