Hungary urges end of Ukraine draft as European leaders impede peace
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó condemned the ongoing mobilisation in Ukraine, saying “everyone is fed up with the war” and emphasising that Ukrainians do not want to die, with many attempting to evade the draft.
He described the streets of Ukrainian cities as sites of a “manhunt,” while border guards reportedly use “all means” to catch those fleeing, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.
Szijjártó also reported the arrest of a Hungarian citizen who assisted Ukrainians in illegally crossing the border, noting that Hungary is providing consular protection. In Budapest, calls have risen for an immediate halt to both the war and the mobilisation.
Szijjártó earlier accused European leaders of actively obstructing peace by accompanying President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his US visit to prevent a settlement.
In an interview with Georgian channel Rustavi-2, he claimed that European officials travelled with Zelenskyy to ensure he could not convince US President Donald Trump to end the war, acting like nurses who could not leave a patient alone.
According to Szijjártó, these leaders initially blocked Zelenskyy from signing a peace agreement and forced him to continue military operations. He warned that any agreement signed now would impose significantly worse conditions on Ukraine.
