Iran welcomes Lebanon ceasefire, credits Pakistan’s diplomatic role
Iran has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire in Lebanon, saying the decision forms part of wider truce understandings between Iran and the United States mediated by Pakistan.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Tehran “welcomes” the cessation of hostilities, according to a statement issued by the ministry.
He said the Islamic Republic had, from the outset of talks with regional and international parties, including discussions held in Islamabad, stressed the need for a simultaneous ceasefire across the region, including Lebanon. Baqaei added that Iran continued to advance this position following the Islamabad negotiations.
The spokesperson also thanked Pakistan for what he described as its “good offices”, saying they played an important role in securing a 10-day ceasefire arrangement. He praised the resilience of the Lebanese people and “resistance forces”, and offered condolences to the families of those killed.
Baqaei further reiterated Iran’s position, calling for the “full withdrawal” of Israeli forces from occupied areas in southern Lebanon, the release of all detainees, the return of displaced residents to their homes, and the reconstruction of damaged areas and infrastructure in Lebanon with support from the international community.
