Iraqi PM to make first foreign visit to US, focus on energy projects
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is set to travel to the United States tomorrow, July 13, on his first official foreign visit since taking office.
According to Anadolu Agency, government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi said the trip reflects Iraq’s policy of maintaining balanced foreign relations and carries particular importance amid the current regional situation.
As part of memorandums of understanding between Iraq and the United States, the two countries plan to develop alternative routes in the oil and gas sector aimed at increasing production capacity and reducing dependence on the Strait of Hormuz. US companies are expected to participate in the projects.
Aboudi added that al-Zaidi is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump during the visit.
The talks are expected to focus on economic and investment ties, as well as efforts to strengthen the capabilities of Iraq’s security forces. The Iraqi prime minister will be accompanied by a high-level delegation.
