Japan pledges continued cooperation with G7 for Ukraine’s recovery

21 February 2025 10:46

The Japanese government has reaffirmed its commitment to working with G7 nations and the broader international community to support Ukraine and maintain sanctions against Russia, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi announced on February 20.

Speaking ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, Hayashi stressed Japan’s strategic approach, warning that the current conflict in Ukraine could serve as a precedent for future security challenges in East Asia, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“Given that today’s situation in Ukraine could become tomorrow’s situation in East Asia, we have continued to provide assistance to Ukraine and maintain sanctions against Russia, working closely with the international community,” Hayashi said.

He also highlighted Japan’s role in Ukraine’s reconstruction, stating that the country is leveraging its expertise in collaboration with both the government and private sector.

When asked about Japan’s stance on economic measures against Russia, Hayashi reaffirmed the government’s unwavering position.

“We continue to cooperate with the international community, primarily with G7 countries, based on what is effective in achieving a just and lasting peace in Ukraine. There is no change in this fundamental position,” he stated.

He further emphasised that the Japanese government is closely monitoring developments in Ukraine and remains committed to working with global partners to ensure peace and stability in the region.

“The government is carefully observing the evolving situation in Ukraine. We will continue to work closely with the international community to achieve a just and lasting peace as soon as possible, as well as to support Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction,” Hayashi concluded.

Japan has been a staunch supporter of Ukraine since the onset of the conflict, providing humanitarian aid, financial assistance, and enforcing sanctions in alignment with its G7 allies.
