Kanak independence supporters unveil strategic plan for full sovereignty
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has released a video titled the "Kanaky" Agreement as a response to the "Bougival" Agreement, outlining the coalition of Kanak independence supporters’ plans to achieve full sovereignty from France.
The coalition officially presented the document, titled “The Kanaky Agreement (2025–2030),” to the public on February 3, 2026, although it was formally adopted earlier, on April 26, 2025, at a congress in Kanak, Caliber.Az reports.
The video emphasizes that the agreement is intended by its authors as a political response to the Bougival Accord, which was developed under French initiative. From the coalition’s perspective, the French proposal seeks to maintain Kanak within the existing governance framework. In contrast, independence supporters reject the continuation of colonial administration and institutional dependency.
The video also highlights the role of movement leader Christian Tene, who, while imprisoned in France, addressed congress participants. In his message, Tene underscored that the process of achieving independence must include a specific timeline and a clearly defined political roadmap.
The coalition further declared that, should France fail to commit to an irreversible path toward Kanak’s independence by 2027, further dialogue within existing institutions would be considered insufficient to resolve the issue conclusively.
According to its authors, the Kanaky Agreement represents a crucial step toward revising the current political model and bringing an end to a prolonged period of colonial governance in the region.
