Kremlin: Russia-US ties face "long and difficult" road to recovery
Russia and the United States face a long and difficult road to restoring their bilateral relations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on March 10.
Speaking at a briefing, Peskov told reporters that Moscow and Washington were at the “initial stage” of rebuilding ties, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
“It will be a fairly long and challenging path,” he said.
“At the very least, both presidents have expressed the political will to move in this direction,” he added, noting that the US president was “constructive enough to engage in dialogue and address issues.”
In recent development, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump discussed bilateral ties in a phone call on February 12. The talks were followed by high-level negotiations between Russian and US officials in Riyadh on February 18, where both sides agreed to start by normalising the work of their diplomatic missions.
On February 28, Washington granted agrément for Moscow’s new ambassador to the United States.
The Kremlin has repeatedly said that under Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden, relations between Moscow and Washington had hit their lowest point. During Biden’s presidency, the US imposed new sanctions on Russia, its leadership and companies, while also restricting the work of Russian diplomats.
