Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa held talks on January 9 with European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at the People’s Palace in Damascus. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani also attended the meeting.
The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation between Syria and the European Union, with particular emphasis on reconstruction efforts and bolstering stability in Syria and the wider region, SANA reports.
Leaders also addressed economic partnerships, sustainable development, humanitarian challenges, and migration issues affecting Europe.
Both sides highlighted the importance of preserving Syria’s territorial integrity and expanding political dialogue to serve the interests of the Syrian people, while fostering a balanced and constructive partnership with the EU.
Earlier in the day, the EU delegation visited the Jobar neighborhood in Damascus, which suffered extensive damage during bombings carried out by the deposed regime.
