Warsaw demands clarification after Hungary shields two Polish nationals
Poland has voiced regret over Hungary’s decision to grant asylum to two Polish nationals, stating that the move has harmed relations between the two countries.
In a statement cited by Polish media, Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that, like other EU member states, Warsaw received notification that asylum had been granted. However, the information submitted to the European Commission did not include any details revealing the identities of the two individuals.
“Poland regrets the recent steps taken by the Hungarian government, which negatively affect bilateral relations and undermine the principles of European solidarity,” the Polish Foreign Ministry said.
According to the statement, Warsaw formally requested clarification from Budapest on who exactly received asylum, but has not yet received a response.
Poland also expressed concern that Hungary’s actions disregard the legal systems of EU member states, and indicated that it intends to convey its negative assessment to the Hungarian ambassador in Warsaw.
Shortly before Christmas, the Hungarian delegation to the EU sent a letter to all other member-state delegations in Brussels, informing them that Hungary had granted asylum to Polish citizens. Their names were not disclosed.
