Kremlin: Trump sincerely seeks Ukraine settlement, but talks stalled
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that US President Donald Trump, despite contradictory statements from the White House, sincerely seeks a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. He added that the same applies to certain members of Trump’s team.
Peskov made the remarks in an interview with Izvestia.
“Despite significant contradictions in statements, what matters are concrete actions,” Peskov said. “And in terms of concrete actions, we see a genuine desire by President Trump and some members of his team to help resolve the Ukrainian conflict.”
He also emphasized that “Russia values the United States’ good offices in facilitating a settlement of the Ukraine conflict and is grateful to Washington for them.”
Peskov noted that Washington had initially believed the conflict in Ukraine would be easy to resolve, while Moscow had warned from the outset that it would be a complex process.
Separately, he said that negotiations on Ukraine, currently on pause, could be resumed, but that this would depend on Kyiv.
“We still hope that the pause that has emerged will eventually be broken and that some contacts will take place. Moreover, we continue to communicate with the Americans through existing channels,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
However, he added that Russia currently sees no progress toward resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
